about

I had to interview family members about a traumatic series of events. This was in relation to a court case. It was necessary for me to do that, and at one level they welcomed what I was doing and had themselves called for it, but on another level it was re-traumatising and unwelcome. It was an emotionally draining experience for all of us. I was poor company.

lyrics

They are gathering in the wheatbelt
They have a lamb upon the coals
Ice in the back of the ute, not nearly enough.
One has to think about this dust.
Family and bad memories
But those were different times
All the children went to live in other people’s homes
But there was no need to leave their own.
Some evil walking through that night
Stay by the fire protect yourself
Fire is your only friend.
I was poor company
I was poor company

I drove into the sunset
I couldn’t see a thing
I could’ve pulled over, but I didn’t
There was an angel in control
Or some sense of empty reverence
No roos on the road as it turned out
No smashed actors on the wrong side
Could’ve seen it as a message
But I didn’t know enough to do that
Falling into pieces
I had something pulling me down
I was poor company
I was poor company
